Try using only Apple extensions plus OMS. You don't even need OMS if you aren't going to use MIDI. Do not use RAM Doubler and you should turn off virtual memory. Tried combining one of the graphics examples with one of the simpler sound ones to do multi-media. The sound stopped and looped when the graphics started up. I think I understand why but will a future version of SC be able to do both? Well I'm not sure you weren't doing something wrong because it should work unless you are in overdrive. However SC is not multithreaded, so if you try to draw a bunch of stuff then synthesis has to wait until you are finished drawing. You would need to schedule out your drawing over time so it doesn't take too much CPU. BTW, what machine are you using? I plan to port SC to BeOS next year. That version will allow SC to be multithreaded. BeOS will be available for 603 and 604 PowerMacs. That version will allow creating a graphics thread and a synth thread so you could do both at once. --- james mccartney james@clyde.as.utexas.edu james@lcsaudio.com If you have a PowerMac check out SuperCollider, a real time synth program: ftp://mirror.apple.com//mirrors/Info-Mac.Archive/gst/snd/super-collider-demo.hqx From sc-users-owner@bga.com Thu Sep 26 18:08:08 1996 Received: (from daemon@localhost) by zoom.bga.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) id RAA09167 for sc-users-outgoing; Thu, 26 Sep 1996 17:36:21 -0500 Received: from maelzel.ircam.fr (maelzel.ircam.fr [129.102.1.10]) by zoom.bga.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) with ESMTP id RAA09130 for ; Thu, 26 Sep 1996 17:36:08 -0500 Received: from hildegard.ircam.fr (hildegard.ircam.fr [129.102.144.17]) Received: from [129.102.145.33] (mac-pedago-studio-assist.ircam.fr [129.102.145.33]) by hildegard.ircam.fr (8.7.5/jtpda-5.2/ircam) with SMTP id XAA10837 for ; Thu, 26 Sep 1996 23:36:04 +0100 (MET) Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" X-Mailer: Eudora F1.5.1 Date: Fri, 27 Sep 1996 00:38:06 +0100 To: sc-users@bga.com From: Richard.Dudas@ircam.fr (dudas) Subject: Re: SC and OMS and Max Sender: owner-sc-users@bga.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: sc-users@bga.com Gary Nelson writes: >So sending something from Max via IAC would get to SC? I tried it out on an 8100/80 and on a PPCpowerbook and had a lot of fun!!! (you can't do really heavy or otherwise useful dsp yet though... running SC in overdrive eats up a lot of cpu time.) -Richard From sc-users-owner@bga.com Fri Sep 27 17:12:05 1996 Received: (from daemon@localhost) by zoom.bga.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) id RAA11820 for sc-users-outgoing; Fri, 27 Sep 1996 17:12:05 -0500 Received: from mail1.sirius.com (mail1.sirius.com [205.134.253.131]) by zoom.bga.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) with ESMTP id RAA11792 for ; Fri, 27 Sep 1996 17:11:57 -0500 Received: from [205.134.227.79] (ppp079-sf1.sirius.com [205.134.227.79]) by mail1.sirius.com (8.6.12/960710) with SMTP id PAA08938 for ; Fri, 27 Sep 1996 15:10:47 -0700 X-Sender: windeatr@sirius.com (Unverified) Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Fri, 27 Sep 1996 15:11:25 -0700 To: sc-users@bga.com From: dan@polysense.com (daniel cummings) Subject: mic buffers file buffers Sender: owner-sc-users@bga.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: sc-users@bga.com Hello James & All, As you might deduce from my following post, I am a "bit of a newbie" at SupColl. I took the plunge since I had worked with Pyrite and built a sucessful text parser. (It was a rush for me!) Here is one of my SC questions: Does anyone have any suggestions for working with both audio file buffers and mic buffers? The two buffers seem to be at cross purposes. For example, when my program loads, it gives me an error about not being able to find "testbuf" which is my mic input buffer. Not a major problem, since it seems to work, and obviously "testbuf" is not a file. I tried to work around this by using loadAudio command, but that didn't seem to work. Basic code fragments posted which show the proper technique for maintaining multiple audio buffers using both recording from the mic input and audio file loading would be much appreciated! Here is one of my SC >questions: >Does anyone have any suggestions for working with both audio file buffers >and mic buffers? defaudioin buffers are for streaming audio from a file or the sound input. You access this using the in() function. defaudioin buffers cannot be random accessed. defaudiobuf buffers are RAM resident audio samples that you can random access. defaudiobuf buffers are accessed using several different function, but not in(). >The two buffers seem to be at cross purposes. No, they just have different purposes. >For example, when my program >loads, it gives me an error about not being able to find "testbuf" which is >my mic input buffer. Could you send me an example file that does this? You are possibly defining mic using defaudiobuf which is incorrect. Lin,Rin, and mic are special names and must be defined using defaudioin, not defaudiobuf. >Not a major problem, since it seems to work, and >obviously "testbuf" is not a file. I tried to work around this by using >loadAudio command, but that didn't seem to work. SC will look for a file with the name of a buffer if you do a loadAllAudio command. If you want to load a file into it, bring that window to the front and use the 'Load Audio' menu command in the File menu. You can also use the loadAudio command but the file must be in one of the folders specified in the 'SetPaths'. >Basic code fragments posted which show the proper technique for maintaining >multiple audio buffers using both recording from the mic input and audio >file loading would be much appreciated! There's nothing special about having them both in one program and there are already demos of both types of operation. I think you are trying to use one type as the other and that will not work. --- james mccartney james@clyde.as.utexas.edu james@lcsaudio.com If you have a PowerMac check out SuperCollider, a real time synth program: ftp://mirror.apple.com//mirrors/Info-Mac.Archive/gst/snd/super-collider-demo.hqx From sc-users-owner@bga.com Mon Sep 30 03:54:47 1996 Received: (from daemon@localhost) by zoom.bga.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) id DAA28139 for sc-users-outgoing; Mon, 30 Sep 1996 03:54:47 -0500 Received: from berlin.shuttle.de (berlin.shuttle.de [194.95.246.252]) by zoom.bga.com (8.6.12/8.6.12) with ESMTP id DAA28123 for ; Mon, 30 Sep 1996 03:54:15 -0500 Received: from [194.95.246.124] (p124.b.shuttle.de [194.95.246.124]) by berlin.shuttle.de (8.7.5/8.7.1) with SMTP id KAA10482; Mon, 30 Sep 1996 10:53:55 +0200 (MET DST) Message-ID: <324FA89A.1CA0@musik.b.shuttle.de> Date: Mon, 30 Sep 1996 11:01:46 +0000 From: Ioannis Zannos <---@---.---> Organization: Staatliches Insitut fuer Musikforschung X-Mailer: Mozilla 2.0 (Macintosh; I; PPC) MIME-Version: 1.0 To: sc-users@bga.com Subject: Re: mic buffers file buffers References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Sender: owner-sc-users@bga.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: sc-users@bga.com In answer to Daniel Cummings request for handling sound input from the microphone (line in) input,=20 here is a short code example. It also answers my own older request regarding how to stop recording into a buffer. As stopfun below you can put any function that calls dspRemove. You will probably have to do something like stopcall =3D `dspRemove; and then:=20 if stopvar then stopcall.value end.if; that is because you must evaluate dspRemove from within the context of the recording function!.=20 Note that the maximum size of the recording buffer is static, and that any looping or other processing must be done "manually", having stored also the length of the actually recorded sound in some variable.=20 The example below works on my computer at least.
