It seems to correspond to areas that are cpu intensive and when I run it in real time it does show the cpu maxing out at the same points where I'm getting unwanted noise. What I can't figure out is why I'm still getting the noise when I do Out To File and Out To Sound Manager is turned off. Isn't this suppose to eliminate such cpu intensive problems? Any suggestions? Sender: owner-sc-users@lists.realtime.net Precedence: bulk Reply-To: sc-users Dear Friends, I'm running out of SUPERCOLLIDER! With a source file of 31K << 800 lines; I've sized SC to 23Meg (100 sec of audiobuf) GUI about 70 items; about 15 items each in ascii and midi jumptables; garbage collection about 8% though it was higher 12% till I trimmed the source. The code is not especially heavy in any one area, a mix of lists of parameters and midi slider handlers, a minimum of disk<>preset tools and a set of instruments for simple sample processing Bugs are not my problem everything works as expected, I just started running out of space. This has happened three times in the same way over the last few days. There was no warning, my patch just fails to compile in some unexpected way after a small addition of code and trashes all or part of the source text. Each time this has happened, I have increased the size of SC a bit (from 20..24meg) as well as winnowing the source code. To recover I take the previous version (to recover the GUI) and paste the most recent changes (from a textfile backup) a hunk at a time. Am I running out of code space or source text space? Is there any thing I can do to gain space? Are there sorts of expressions which are especially wasteful in SC? I need to finish this for a premier in Paris at the Chatelet in a week and a half Joel Ryan _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ Joel Ryan STEIM Frankfurt Ballet Institute of Sonology _/ jr@xs4all.nl +31 (020) 624-3886 fax 626-4252 _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ From sc-users-owner Sun Jun 15 21:31:32 1997 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by mail2.realtime.net (AIX4.2/UCB 8.7/8.7) id VAA12626 for sc-users-outgoing; Sun, 15 Jun 1997 21:29:56 -0500 (CDT) Received: from hurricane.netspace.net.au (hurricane.netspace.net.au [203.10.110.65]) by mail2.realtime.net (AIX4.2/UCB 8.7/8.7) with ESMTP id VAA12320 for ; Sun, 15 Jun 1997 21:29:38 -0500 (CDT) Received: from [203.33.161.26] (dialup-m6-26.Melbourne.netspace.net.au [203.33.161.26]) by hurricane.netspace.net.au (8.8.5/8.8.5) with SMTP id MAA20637 for ; Mon, 16 Jun 1997 12:26:43 +1000 (EST) X-Sender: nfrayne@pop.netspace.net.au Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Mon, 16 Jun 1997 12:31:26 +1000 To: sc-users@lists.realtime.net From: nfrayne@netspace.net.au (NIGEL FRAYNE) Subject: Re: running out of SUPERCOLLIDER! Also anything on the basics of scripted audio processing (operating principles and history, starting with Csound, others?). And while we're at it, anything summarizing the workings of machines like the Kurzweil 2000 series that combine sampling and synthesis together. (Additive) synthesis and sampling are both topics I'm somewhat familiar with; I'm interested in using SC to build bridges between them, eg. taking a recorded voice and turning it into an oscillator, etc. Just don't want to re-invent the wheel while doing it. Rebirth RB-338 (Stienberg/Propellerhead)is a recent software sequencer/synthesizer that bases itself on popular analog drum machines. It doesn't just just play back samples either. The alpha demo I played with months ago was quite impressive, and now the full product is shipping. This software seems aimed at the current techno/electronic music market, but to be honest, I wouldn't mind picking it up sometime. Here's excerpts from the read-me on the web site at http://www.steinberg.net/products/rebirth/index.html where a downloadable demo is also available. .. . . ReBirth RB-338 Techno Micro Composer Propellerhead Software and Steinberg Soft- & Hardware proudly present: ReBirth RB-338. Two silver synths and a black drum machine. Two pieces of classic analog synthesizer hardware reincarnated as software. All the quirks and subtle qualities of analog synths, coupled with the convenience of modern computers. Yet with that unmistakable analog sound. Does all this sound impossible? Well, here's what we did: instead of sampling the sound, we "sampled" the actual synth hardware. Then we converted the mathematical model into lightning fast computer code. So fast that it runs on the computer you already have. No special cards, DSP chips or other expensive additions required. Functions: ReBirth RB-338 Two bass line synthesizers, one "analog" drum machine, a distortion box and a delay. Runs alongside Cubase VST and other sequencers. Completely self-contained software synthesis. No MIDI, no external synthesizers, no samplers or special cards required. Audio quality: 16 bit, 44.1kHz output. Stereo. Awesome sound! Full automation of all knobs! Pattern and song editing functions like copy and paste, transpose, shift, random etc. Songs and patterns can be exported as AIFF or Wave audio files. Multiple documents - many songs can be open at the same time. Synchronization to MIDI clock. Song mode allows you to chain patterns together and record knob movements. Full automation! Shape the sound! All controls work in real time and in the same way as on the real thing. Note the Accent and Slide features! The rhythm section has sixteen "analog" sounds and real-time controls like Tune, Tone, Snappy and Decay. Variable levels of distortion. Can be used on any machine. Delay with length, feedback and pan controls. Always in time with the music. 32 patterns. Select here or from your computer keyboard. Build songs in real time! The mixer allows you to set level, panning and effect parameters. System Requirements: Macintosh: Power Macintosh with 601, 603, 603e, 604, 604e processor or better. 66MHz or faster. 16 Megabytes of RAM. It is not a specific course on SuperCollider, but we introduce the basics of the syntax and semantics of this sometimes cryptic but powerful language. ------------------------------------ ---Digital Sound and Music Design--- ------------------------------------ Summer Institute in Santa Barbara, California, USA, August 18-22, 1997 UCSB Extension in cooperation with the Center for Research in Electronic Art Technology CREATE), Department of Music, UCSB Digital sound is an integral component of music composition, recording, motion pictures, broadcasting, CD production, internet audio, computer games, and multimedia. This practical, introductory institute offers technical, hands-on training in the use of programs for digital multitrack recording, mixing, synthesis, and processing. It features cutting-edge techniques and leading computer programs, including those written and developed by the distinguished faculty. Beginning with sound editing and mixing programs, participants learn the basics of digital audio multitrack recording and mixing. Building rapidly on this foundation, the institute presents new software synthesis techniques based on the manipulation of micro-sound, such as granular and pulsar synthesis, using Cloud Generator and SuperCollider. Work continues with sound processing techniques, including modulation, convolution, spatialization, and pitch/time manipulations, with programs such as Hyperprism and SoundHack. In the final part of the course, participants learn the technique of compact disc mastering. Students are encouraged to bring tapes and CDs of sounds that can be used in mixing and processing. The CREATE studios are made available in the evenings for hands-on practice with assistance. The studios feature a full array of Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX computers, synthesizers, processors, and multitrack recording equipment. Participants sign up at the beginning of the workshop for individual lab time, which is a minimum of 12 hours. At the end of the course, students have a working knowledge of state-of-the-art digital audio recording, mixing, synthesis, and sound processing techniques. The sound examples prepared by students during the institute are made into an audio CD, and each student will receive a copy. Skills and knowledge gained in this course can be applied to commercial, academic, or home-studio music and sound production. Note: Additional hands-on studio time with assistance: Monday, 5:30-10pm, and Tuesday-Friday, 5-10pm, August 18-22. Participants sign up at the beginning of the workshop. Individual lab time is a minimum of 12 hours. Please bring tapes and CDs of sounds that can be used in mixing and processing.
