I prefer it to the towers at work (mostly I guess because I'm familiar with it and do most of my work here). The only drawback, of course, are the speakers. Hi, I am using a "More Brain Less Brawn" G3 333 LapTop for SC and it works great, it's also a great performance setup, I had no bad crashes with it and SuperCollider yet. I love it. (I am using System 8.6 after experiencing trouble with system 9) If you have the money, there is a nifty audio card for this setup that offers balanced digital (SP/DIF) and analog in and out (24 bit.. well.. that's what it says, but the actual dynamic range corresponds to about 20bit maximum). http://www.digigram.com/products/vxpocket_features.html There is one thing that two of my friends experienced: Connect it to a console and switch the phantom power on and you'll fry the card! Of course, LapTops are not as expandable as the big machines, but softwarewise I have experienced no limitations. (The only thing that really s*** is that newer, faster and cheaper ones keep coming out). Give my greetings to Berlin, I have just moved away from there, but I might return next year. jo ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2000 16:41:32 -0700 (PDT) From: yon <---@---.---> Subject: Re: powerbook? -> Powerbook! hello, i've been told that the latency of the vxpocket device is very high. like lots of people, i suspect, i'm waiting for a good firewire or usb powerbook solution to appear before abandoning the built in audio on my powerbook. cheers, yon > (I am using System 8.6 after experiencing trouble with system 9) > If you have the money, there is a nifty audio card for this setup that > offers balanced digital (SP/DIF) and analog in and out (24 bit.. well.. > that's what it says, but the actual dynamic range corresponds to about > 20bit maximum). > > http://www.digigram.com/products/vxpocket_features.html > > There is one thing that two of my friends experienced: > Connect it to a console and switch the phantom power on and you'll fry > the card! > > Of course, LapTops are not as expandable as the big machines, but > softwarewise I have experienced no limitations. Is this true? can you use a Motu 2408 with just firewire? I didn't think that was possible. Motu does use a nice firewire connecter, but it isn't actually firewire and you still need the pci card to get into the machine. ( I hope/wish i was wrong though). jeff P.S. Hey David! (but no 2408) Nope, unfortunately. Feel free to pound on MOTU. The "Audiowire" used by MOTU is very close to firewire, but not completely compatible. They won't say exactly what is different, other than they depend alot on the custom chips on the PCI-328 card. I think they also run a custom protocol over the wire to get accurate timing. When the 2408 was released, Yamaha and others were still working on jitter problems w/ firewire. However, the release of mLan, Yamaha's (and the AES's) protocol for multi-channel audio over firewire is imminent and we should see products soon (perhaps summer NAMM, almost certainly by the end of the year). The only multi-channel option right now for laptops is a magma chassis, which is expensive --$1400. Jim Jeff Ridenour wrote: > > Is this true? can you use a Motu 2408 with just firewire?
