Because those numbers just print as 7 and 10 but actually differ by very small amounts. Floating point math is not exact. 0.6 is not exactly representable in binary floating point, but is instead an infinitely repeating fraction in the same way as 1/3 is in base 10. So one of those 7's which was created from 1.0 + 0.6 + 0.6 + ... 0.6, is actually very slightly smaller than 7. If you were to subtract both of those values from 7.0, you would find that one of them would give you a left over value around -1e-17 or so. not a bug. - --- james mccartney james@audiosynth.com SuperCollider - a real time synthesis programming language for the PowerMac. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 14:12:02 -0500 From: James McCartney <---@---.---> Subject: Re: BugP on 6/27/01 11:12 AM, Jesper Elén at j.elen@telia.com wrote: > x.removeAllSuchThat({ arg item, iter; x.occurencesOf(item) > 1 }); This happens to be a slow O(n*n) method to remove duplicates. a = Array.series(19, 1.0, 0.5); b = Array.series(13, 1.0, 0.75); c = Array.series(16, 1.0, 0.6); y = IdentitySet.new.addAll(a).addAll(b).addAll(c); x = Array.new.addAll(y).sort.postln; This doesn't solve the inherent inexactitude of floating point math though. What you can do is quantize away the small differences caused by repeated summing of inexact values. a = Array.series(19, 1.0, 0.5).round(0.5); b = Array.series(13, 1.0, 0.75).round(0.75); c = Array.series(16, 1.0, 0.6).round(0.6); y = IdentitySet.new.addAll(a).addAll(b).addAll(c); x = Array.new.addAll(y).sort.postln; Actually ArrayedCollection::series could be modified to avoid this problem. So perhaps you could consider it a bug. With the following fix, you don't need the calls to round() : *series { arg size, start, step; var array; array = this.new(size); size.do({ arg i; array.add(start + (step * i)); }); ^array } - --- james mccartney james@audiosynth.com SuperCollider - a real time synthesis programming language for the PowerMac. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 15:56:31 -0400 From: christian adam hresko <---@---.---> Subject: transforms does anyone have a good website (or book) recommendation that goes over the laplace (sp?) transform? my level of mathematics is calc I, calc II, linear algebra, and stats. so... something that i could actually understand, and better yet, put into (C++) code. cheers, christian ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 13:43:45 -0700 From: cramakrishnan@acm.org Subject: Re: BugP James McCartney writes: > > not a bug.
